Jan Verbruggen
°1980 (B)
lives and works in Brussels
Jan Verbruggen makes paintings, drawings and installations. In his paintings imaginary landscapes are seen from above, opening the perspective and disorientating the viewer. Wandering figures overlook landscapes together with the spectator, or are immersed in the scenes. Verbruggen explores the boundaries of the territory that surrounds him. Orientation is essential in this process, like a map is indispensable when traveling. Not only the artist is searching for navigation and timing, also the spectator is challenged to leave the focus-point and to wander through the scenery, where every brushstroke is visible and reveals another detail.

Jan Verbruggen got his master-degree in painting at Sint-Lucas, Brussels.

Since 2013 he is head and artistic director of w-o-l-k-e (Brussels).

He exhibits regional and internationally since 2007, recent exhibitions include Vienna International Apartment, Instituto rural de arte hoz del jucar (Albacete, SP), Arteles Creative Center (Haukijarvi, F), Le Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) museum for contemporary art and at the Belvue museum in Brussels (B). In addition he exhibited in Galerie Fortlaan 17 (I Told You So. The World Is Flat, Ghent, Belgium, 2013 - 2014), Arteles Creative Centre (Nomad, The Deconstruction Of Place, Haukijarvi, Finland, 2011), SECONDroom (What’s in a Piece Of Soil, Antwerp, Belgium, 2011), Het Wilde Weten (Moordnoces@ Het Wilde Weten, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 2010), Instituto rural de arte hoz del jucar (Confrontaciones: Encuentro de posiciones, Albacete, Spain, 2009), Vienna International Apartment (Land.
